Cereus need for sleep ...

Seriously, I need to sleep. Last night, I stayed up to view, photograph and celebrate the annual show put on by my Nightblooming Cereus. It blooms only once a year, for a single night and is a member of the cactus family.

Understandably, I had to stay awake to witness the beautiful show put on by my Princess of the Night (another name given to this plant).

I acquired my Cereus as a cutting about ten years ago and have grown it in a clay pot. I posted about it blooming the first time last year, and this year I was a bit more diligent about photographing its two blooms (circled above).

I decided to photograph both flowers beginning yesterday evening to create a time-lapse from bud through full opening of the blossom. Flower #1 is on the left in each image, Flower #2 is on the right.

Close up of Flower #1 below.

All photographs by Alamodeus.

By 6:30 am, the petals had closed with the first rays of the morning sun, leaving us to await another midsummer's night before the next Cereus show.

Now, I may just take a nap!

How amazing and what dedication to stay up all night! Maybe you were able to do some art while waiting every two hours!

What potting soil do you use for your selenicerus pteranthus? Mine isn't any ware near as happy as yours (of course I live in the frozen north, so that could have something to do with it)
