Country kitchens ...

Sure, I can say a great deal about the timeless simplicity of a country kitchen. But, I think it's the warm, inviting ease that triggers our happiness response to these rooms.

I feel an uncontrollable urge to bake bread when I see country kitchens like these. With so much personality and rustic appeal, any one of the country charmers shown here would make meal preparation a joy.

The beauty of wood certainly takes center stage in these kitchens. Images above via Furniture and Design Ideas (left) and photo from my archives (sorry, no credit at right).

Whether waxed to perfection on a simple island or gracefully aged in vintage cabinetry, I think warm woods are by far the best elements in country decor.

Painted wood also earns my praise. I love the 'French' blue of the cabinetry designed by Hilary Musser in the two kitchens above.

And, white is always an option, particularly if the country kitchen has a cottage influence.

Now, when is that bread going to be ready?
